Urinary Tract Infections- What Are They?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system; this includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. If not treated in time, the infection can spread to the kidneys causing serious consequences. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria that enter the urinary tract through the urethra and then multiply in the bladder.

Symptoms of UTI’s usually include:

  • A persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • Passing frequent but small amounts of urine
  • Urine that appears cloudy
  • Signs of blood in the urine
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain particularly in women

Women are usually at a greater risk of contracting an infection than men. There are certain risk factors involved with a urinary tract infection; these include sexual activity, menopause and even certain types of birth control.

Urinary tract infections can easily be overlooked or mistaken for other conditions in older adults. If your or someone you know are experiencing any symptoms closely related to a UTI, seek a confirmation using either the Utiva Diagnostic Test Strips or visiting your family doctor. Treatment for UTI’s include antibiotics prescribed by your doctor.
